BPL : Below poverty line in India

by admin on July 1, 2009

BPL stands for below poverty line in India. Some says people under below poverty line in India are almost 50% of the total population while few says it is 28%. Now when India’s population is 100 crore, that is 1billion, mere 28% makes 28 crores or 280 million! Now that is a mind boggling number and 500 million would be staggering number… 280 million poor and hungry people.

But why this BPL thing ? Indian government provides BPL cards to people below poverty line. With BPL card, people can get rice at Rs. 2, house built by government and many other facilities. Most probably many people like to get BPL cards in order to avail those facilities. And Indian Government is not advertising what other privileges people lose if they have a BPL cards! It looks like an incentive to become a BPL card holder.

We all must have read the story with a moral than one must teach people to fish instead of providing one fish a day! But sadly, Indian government seems not to have attended primary school where that story was taught.
