Edmond Dante ? Most probably, that is one of the best revenge stories ever told.
My favourite hero in a revenge plot is Shakuni of Mahabharata. Many people may not know the complete story of Shakuni, the person responsible for sending Pandav to jungles for 14 years after beating them in a game of Pasha and !
Shakuni was prince of Gandhar ( Now Kandahar, claimed by many), he was the weakest and youngest among his brothers of 100 just like Kauravas. Duryodhan once found out that his mother Gandhari was married to a goat so that King Subal ( father of Shakuni and king of Gandhar) could not be blamed for marrying off his daughter to a blind man, Dhritirastra, Father of Duryodhan. So Duryodhana attacked Gandhar and captured King Subal, his 100 sons and imprisoned them. These prisoners of 101 people were given meal for one person. This was nothing but scheme of Duryodhana to starve all of them to death. But the king Subal as well as his 100 sons, decided that one of them would live and take revenge on Kauravas. They gave the responsibility to Shakuni, who was the youngest, weakest and looked most harmless among them.
For more than 140 days, Shakuni used to eat his tummy full while his father and brothers observed him eating and were starving to death. When they all died, Shakuni was allowed out of prison on Gandhari’s insistence. Shakuni did not go back to his kingdom but stayed on with Kauravs as a jester in their court, but never forgetting his mission of killing everyone of 100 Kuru princes. He eventually defeated Pandavas in Pasha game and advised Duryodhana to refuse even a land on the tip of needle to Pandavas when they came back from 14 years of exile. This resulted in death of all Kuru princes. He happily himself got killed by Pandav prince Sahdev but not before explaining him how he killed whole Kuru princes!
